Join Fulcrum Point New Music Project as we return to live, in-person performance with five safely staged, socially distant concerts in neighborhood parks throughout the south, west, and north sides of Chicago. Some performances will also be streamed via Facebook.
Dick Higgin's Music for Trumpets and Trees will be performed by a trumpet ensemble drawn from the fields of be-bop, classical, jazz and new music: Josh Berman, Stephen Burns, Ben LaMar Gay, Chad McCullough and Corey Wilkes.
Dick Higgins (March 15, 1938 – October 25, 1998) was an American composer, poet, publisher, painter, philosopher and Fluxus artist. After studying music with Henry Cowell, Higgins studied experimental composition with John Cage at the New School for Social Research in New York in which a core group formed in 1958 that would eventually become Fluxus.
“The twelve pages of notation are used as precisely as possible, according to any predetermined system: each trumpeter works up his own system. The system should determine speed of performance, volume, pitches, possible glissandi or trills, timbre, tonguing and overall style. The system should be worked out according to the trees in the particular performance area of a specific performance, and will thus vary from performance place to performance place.”
