Sound Tracks :: Educational Program overview

What is Sound Tracks?

Sound TracksThe Sound Tracks educational program, designed for 4th and 5th grade students, assists Chicago’s Public School system to bring better programming through music appreciation to our city’s youth. Sound Tracks seeks to spark a life-long love of music amongst students whose school curriculum has offered little or no musical programming.

Conceived of by Fulcrum Point’s percussionist, Jeff Handley, and developed by Fulcrum Point’s Artistic Director, Stephen Burns, Sound Tracks is groundbreaking interdisciplinary outreach, motivated by a vision to bridge world music and contemporary music, and in so doing, developing a broader audience for new art music.

How does SOUND TRACKS work?

The Sound Tracks concept, inspired by the diversity of world instruments and sounds, uses music as a catalyst for learning about different cultures all around the world.

The program consists of six 50-minute class lessons, taught by Fulcrum Point New Music Project’s musicians and international artists. Music guides the Sound Tracks journey, and with accompanying PowerPoint presentations, the geography, topography, art, architecture, and cultures of each world region are highlighted. Sound Tracks lessons provide a unique context for students to participate in clear conceptual thinking for better cultural understandings.

Individual schools’ teachers become involved with the Sound Tracks program with a collaborative training seminar during which our musicians help teachers fine-tune the needs of each class.
